At the "Kop van Zuid" in Rotterdam, the build of the Essalam Mosque has started in October 2003. It is the largest mosque of Europe. The building has got a square surface of 2600m², divided on four levels. The mosque is multifunctional and does not only provide a space for praying, but also for other social and cultural facilities.
The style of the design is following the 15th-century tradition of the Mamluk architecture from Cairo, but also the modern Jumeira mosque in Dubai was an important source of inspiration.
The Essalam mosque has been designed by the architect firm Molenaar & Van Winden. They also design many other inspiring buildings in Rotterdam, which you can see at www.molenaarvanwinden.nl.
